Dua for Strength and Independence in Old Age

Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua can be recited at any time, but it is particularly poignant to invoke during the evening or morning prayers, or whenever one reflects on the blessings of health and well-being. For elders, it's a constant reminder to seek Allah's protection against the decline that can accompany aging, fostering a mindset of reliance on Him and proactive supplication for continued strength and independence.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence of heart. Understand each phrase as a sincere plea to Allah (SWT). Imagine His protection surrounding you as you utter the words. It's recommended to raise your hands in supplication, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge in Allah from the loss of blessings, the decline of health ('afiyah), and His displeasure encompasses a profound desire for a dignified and independent life, especially in old age. This dua helps foster a sense of contentment with what Allah has provided, while actively seeking His continued protection against hardship and dependence. It aligns the heart with Allah's will, promoting patience and resilience, which are crucial for maintaining a positive outlook and independence.

Source & Authentication

This dua is part of a longer supplication narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us, in our prayer, these words: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahyaya wal-ma mat.' Then, one day he taught us the following, and he mentioned it in the prayer: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of Hellfire, and I seek refuge in You from the torment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.) And he mentioned: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'ilmin la yanfa', wa min qalbin la yashaa', wa min nafsin la tashba', wa min da'watin la yustajabu laha.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, and from a heart that is not humbled, and from a soul that is not satisfied, and from a supplication that is not answered.) It was narrated by Muslim.
