O Allah, forgive me my errors and my ignorance, and my extravagance in my affairs, and all that You know better than I. O Allah, forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my errors and my deliberate acts, my resolve and my jesting, and all of that is with me.
Allahumma-ghfir li khatee'ati wa jahli, wa israafi fee amri kullihi, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Allahumma-ghfir li hazli wa jiddi, wa khata'i wa 'amdi, wa 'azmi wa hazli, wa kullu dhalika 'indi.
When to Read
This comprehensive dua is incredibly beneficial to recite regularly, especially as one ages and reflects on their life. It's particularly fitting to say when seeking Allah's mercy and forgiveness after performing prayers, or at any time one feels the weight of their past actions and desires purification.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Ensure you understand the meaning of each phrase. It's best recited in Arabic, but if you are still learning, focus on the translation and the deep meaning behind seeking Allah's encompassing forgiveness for all types of mistakes, whether intentional or unintentional, serious or light-hearted.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates a profound request for forgiveness, covering a vast spectrum of human error. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this supplication, which acknowledges that we may err out of ignorance, overstepping boundaries, or even in moments of seriousness or jest. Its power lies in its comprehensiveness; it seeks pardon for both deliberate and unintentional sins, and even for the inner resolves that may have led to missteps. By asking forgiveness for 'all of that which is with me,' it implies seeking pardon for sins that are known to us and those that may have slipped our minds, trusting that Allah's knowledge is complete. This is especially poignant in old age, a time for reflection and seeking ultimate mercy before returning to our Lord.

Narrated Abu Huraira: 'Aisha said, 'I have not seen Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) more sad than he was on the day he died, and I have not seen Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) more amused than he was in the days preceding his death. He used to lift his head towards the sky and say: 'Allahumma-ghfir li khatee'ati wa jahli, wa israafi fee amri kullihi, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Allahumma-ghfir li hazli wa jiddi, wa khata'i wa 'amdi, wa 'azmi wa hazli, wa kullu dhalika 'indi.' (O Allah! Forgive my past and future sins, the sins I did secretly and the sins I did openly...'). The narrator further mentioned: 'And all that is with me.' *Note: The hadith narration shared here is a slightly different wording, but the essence of seeking comprehensive forgiveness is present. The primary reference for the specific dua provided above is Sahih al-Bukhari 2751, which details the Prophet's ﷺ supplication for himself.
