It was narrated from Tariq bin Ashyam that a man asked the Prophet (ﷺ): 'What should I say when I ask my Lord?' He said: 'Say: Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wa 'afiyati fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahummastur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma ihfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yamini wa 'an shimali wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'azamatika an ughtala min tahti. (O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs and my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my private parts and secure me against the things I fear. O Allah, protect me from before me and from behind me, and from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your Might from being taken from beneath me.)' He said: 'And should I learn to use the thumbs?' The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Say: Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuda wal-'afafa wal-ghina (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment).' He said: 'Say: Allahumma inni as'aluka rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan muqabalan (O Allah, I ask You for pure provision and accepted deeds).' (The narrator then mentioned a similar narration about a man asking the Prophet (ﷺ) what he should supplicate with. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Say: Allahumma aghfirli, warhamni, wahdini, wa 'afini, wa-rzukni (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, grant me well-being, and provide for me).') So when he got up to leave, he said: 'The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has commanded me to say these words.'
