Dua for Contentment and Satisfaction in Old Age

Old Age & Elderly
Hasan HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 5491

O Allah, I ask You for a happy life, and a happy death, and that You make my affair in the Hereafter above many of Your creation. I ask You for Your pleasure, and I ask You for Paradise. I seek refuge in You from doubt, and associating partners with You, and immorality. And I seek refuge in You from the disgrace of this world and the punishment of the grave.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ayshan sa'eedan, wa mawtan sa'eedan, wa an taj'ala amri fi aakhirati fawqa katheerin min khalqika, wa as'aluka ridak, wa as'aluka al-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min ash-shakki, wash-shirki, wal-fujoor, wa a'udhu bika min khizyid-dunya, wa 'adhabil-quboor

When to Read

This dua is excellent to recite at any time, but it is particularly poignant for those in their old age. It's a way to consciously ask Allah for His blessings on both your current life and your ultimate return, seeking contentment with what He has ordained and His ultimate pleasure. Recite it after your obligatory prayers or during the quiet moments of the day.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt connection to Allah. Imagine asking a loving guardian for protection and provision. Raise your hands as you would for any supplication, facing the Qiblah if possible, and be present in your heart as you utter each word. It is recommended to pause briefly after each request or seeking of refuge, reflecting on its meaning.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks the best for both this life and the next. It encompasses asking for a 'happy life' and 'happy death,' which are the ultimate goals for any believer. Seeking Allah's pleasure ('ridak') is paramount, as it is the key to entering Paradise. Furthermore, it proactively seeks refuge from significant spiritual dangers like doubt (which can lead to weakened faith), shirk (associating partners with Allah, the gravest sin), and immorality (fujoor). Finally, it asks for protection from worldly humiliation and the torment of the grave, securing peace in both realms. This encompasses a deep desire for contentment with Allah's decree, even in old age, as His pleasure is the highest aspiration.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ayshan sa'eedan, wa mawtan sa'eedan, wa an taj'ala amri fi aakhirati fawqa katheerin min khalqika, wa as'aluka ridak, wa as'aluka al-jannah, wa a'udhu bika min ash-shakki, wash-shirki, wal-fujoor, wa a'udhu bika min khizyid-dunya, wa 'adhabil-quboor.'
