A Dua for Our Elders: Seeking Allah's Pleasure and Reward

Old Age & Elderly
Hasan HadithAl-Mu'jam al-Awsat 6354

O Allah, forgive the Muslim men and women, and the believing men and women. Rectify their affairs between them, and unite their hearts. Make the earth subservient to them, and send down Your blessings upon them. Make them guided and guiding. Grant them victory over their enemies. Inspire them to fulfill what You have obligated upon them, and inspire them to remember and thank You. Improve their outcome in all their affairs, grant them well-being from all evil, and protect them from the evil of what You have decreed to be evil.

Allahumma-ghfir lil-muslimeena wal-muslimaati, wal-mu'mineena wal-mu'minaati, wa aslih dhata baynihim, wa allif bayna quloobihim, wa sakhkhir lahumul-ard, wa anzil 'alayhim barakaatika, waj'alhum hudatan mahdiyyeen, wansurhum 'ala 'aduwwihim, wa awzi'hum an yu'addu ilayka ma-ftaradta 'alayhim, wa awzi'hum dhikraka wa shukraka, wa hassin 'aaqibatahum fi jamee'i umoorihim, wa 'aafihim min kulli soo', wakfihim sharra ma ja'alta lahu sharran.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is a beautiful supplication we can make for our elders, especially when they are facing the challenges of old age or when we simply wish to pray for their continued well-being and Allah's pleasure. It's perfect for making individually, or as a group prayer after congregational prayers, or during times of reflection like the last third of the night.

How to Read

This dua is a collective supplication for the entire Ummah, including our elders. Recite it with sincerity and a focused heart, visualizing your elders and all the elderly Muslims receiving Allah's mercy and forgiveness. It’s a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of the Ummah and our responsibility to pray for one another.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific wording is found in Hasan collections, the act of supplicating for Muslims, especially the elderly who have dedicated their lives to faith and family, is highly encouraged. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us the immense value of dua, stating: 'The dua of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is readily answered. An angel is appointed to his side. Whenever he prays for his brother with good, the angel appointed to him says: Ameen, and may you have the like of it.' (Sahih Muslim 2156). Praying for our elders, asking Allah to forgive their shortcomings, unite their hearts, and grant them blessings, is a beautiful way to honor them and seek Allah's immense reward for their lifelong efforts.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Al-Tabarani in Al-Mu'jam al-Awsat (6354) with a chain of narration considered Hasan. The text is a comprehensive prayer for the Ummah. While not exclusively for elders, its inclusion of seeking forgiveness, unity, blessings, and protection makes it a fitting supplication for them.
