Morning Dua for Protection from the Evils of the Tongue and Gossip

Morning Adhkar
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5088

O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no god but You.

Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa anta. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wal-faqr. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, la ilaha illa anta.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is part of the Morning Adhkar (dhikr). It should be recited immediately upon waking up, after Fajr prayer, before the sun has fully risen. It sets a protective tone for the entire day, asking Allah for safety and well-being in various aspects of life.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full awareness of its meaning. Focus on each phrase, asking Allah directly for the protection and well-being mentioned. Ensure you are in a state of purity if possible, and ideally face the Qiblah. Make it a habit to recite it every morning.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua in the morning is a comprehensive request for Allah's protection. It encompasses physical health ('afini fi badani), sensory faculties like hearing and sight ('afini fi sam'i, 'afini fi basari), shielding one from disbelief (kufri) and financial hardship (faqr). Crucially, it includes seeking refuge from the torment of the grave ('adhabil-qabri). While not explicitly mentioning the tongue, a protected body, hearing, and sight are foundational to preventing involvement in harmful speech like gossip. When we ask Allah for overall well-being and refuge from severe punishments, we are implicitly asking Him to guide our actions and words away from sin.

Narrated by Abdur Rahman bin Abu Bakra: My father said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) supplicating every morning: "O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no god but You." He used to repeat it three times in the morning and three times in the evening.'
