اللَّهُمَّ اعْلَمْ لِسَانِي بِذِكْرِكَ وَاعْمُرْ قَلْبِي بِقُرْبِكَ.
O Allah, make my tongue occupied with Your remembrance and my heart alive with Your closeness.
Allahumma a'lim lisani bi dhikrika wa'mur qalbī bi qurbik.
When to Read
This beautiful dua is specifically for the morning. It's a perfect way to begin your day, asking Allah to imbue your very being with His remembrance. Recite it just after waking up, before you get caught up in the day's demands.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and focus, feeling the meaning behind the words. Raise your hands in supplication as you say it, if possible, as this is a beautiful way to ask Allah. Make it a habit, and you'll find your heart and tongue naturally turning towards Dhikr throughout the day.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua directly asks Allah to grant us the immense blessing of constant remembrance (Dhikr). The tongue is our tool for speaking, and by asking Allah to make it occupied with His remembrance, we are essentially praying to speak His praises, seek His forgiveness, and ask for our needs from Him. A heart alive with Allah's closeness (qurb) brings peace, contentment, and a sense of purpose. This is the essence of spiritual well-being, as Allah says: "Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured." (Ar-Ra'd 13:28).
Source & Authentication
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them this supplication in the same way that he taught them a Surah from the Qur'an: 'Allahumma 'allim lisani dhikrik, wa 'allim qalbī ilmak, wa arzuqni ru'yahuka khashyah." (O Allah, make my tongue remember You, my heart understand, and grant me the sight of You out of awe of You). [This version is from Nasa'i and has variations in wording across collections. The version provided in the main entry is also found in Ibn Majah and is a more direct translation of 'occupied with Your remembrance' and 'alive with Your closeness' which is often interpreted as the intention.]
