Morning Adhkar
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawud 5088

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, from the evil of my sight, from the evil of my tongue, from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my discharge (sexual organ).

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is recommended to be recited in the morning, after Fajr prayer, as part of the daily supplications that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us for seeking Allah's protection throughout the day. It's a beautiful way to start your day with reliance on Allah against all potential harms, internal and external, with a specific focus on guarding against the misuse of our senses and faculties, including our speech.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with focused intention. Raise your hands slightly as you make dua, as was the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Visualize Allah's protection encompassing you as you utter these words. The key is heartfelt supplication and sincere reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication is a powerful shield against sins that stem from our senses. By seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of the tongue, we are asking Him to protect us from lying, backbiting, slander, harsh words, and all forms of harmful speech that can damage relationships, incur Allah's displeasure, and lead to regret. It also encompasses protection from impure thoughts (heart) and sinful desires (discharge), making it a holistic prayer for a righteous day. The Prophet ﷺ himself would often repeat such comprehensive duas, showing their importance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minka la ilaha illa anta, 'a'im-u wal-mustakh-fina wal-mustad'e'een. (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from You. There is no god but You, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining). And he would say: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my discharge).
