O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi
When to Read
This profound supplication is ideally recited in the morning after the Fajr prayer, as part of the recommended *adhkar* (remembrances) for the morning. It sets a protective tone for the entire day, seeking Allah’s shield against harmful actions originating from our senses and inner self, particularly the tongue.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly in supplication while making dua, as was the practice of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Virtues & Benefits
By seeking refuge in Allah from the evils of the tongue, we are asking for protection from gossip, backbiting, slander, harsh words, lies, and any other harmful speech that can damage relationships, harm others, and displease our Creator. The tongue, while a small organ, has immense power to do good or evil, and seeking Allah’s protection for it is a vital act of self-preservation and devotion. This dua also encompasses protection for our hearing, sight, heart, and reproductive organs, highlighting a holistic approach to seeking divine guardianship.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to teach his Companions *dua* (supplications) for all circumstances, just as he taught them *Surahs* from the Qur’an. One of the supplications he taught for the morning was: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.) This indicates the importance of consciously seeking Allah's protection against potential harms, especially those stemming from our faculties.
