Morning Adhkar
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5088

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.

When to Read

This powerful dua should be recited in the morning, ideally after Fajr prayer, as part of your daily Adhkar (remembrance of Allah). It sets a protective shield around you for the day, asking Allah to safeguard your faculties and intentions from negative influences, particularly those related to speech and thought.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a focused heart. Visualize Allah's protection enveloping you as you speak the words. Utter it clearly, ensuring you understand the meaning of each plea. It is a personal supplication, so do it in a state of calm reflection, whether alone or with family.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of the tongue is crucial. Gossip, slander (gheebah), and harsh words can lead to immense strife, broken relationships, and grave sins. By making this dua, we are actively asking Allah to grant us control over our speech, to protect us from uttering that which displeases Him, and to shield us from becoming victims of others' harmful tongues. It also encompasses protection for our hearing (from listening to inappropriate things), sight (from looking at impermissible things), heart (from evil thoughts and intentions), and our private parts, signifying a holistic plea for purity and well-being.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen. (Sunan Abi Dawud 5088, Sunan An-Nasa'i 5514 - Graded Hasan by some scholars). This supplication highlights the Prophet's ﷺ profound awareness of the potential harms emanating from our senses and inner selves, and his proactive reliance on Allah's protection.
