Morning Dua for Divine Light to Illuminate the Heart

Morning Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6316

O Allah, make light within my heart, light within my sight, light within my hearing, light to my right, light to my left, light above me, light below me, light before me, light behind me, and make light within my soul. Magnify light for me, and grant me light upon light.

Allahumma aj'al fi qalbi nooran, wa fi basari nooran, wa fi sam'i nooran, wa 'an yameeni nooran, wa 'an yasaari nooran, wa fawqi nooran, wa tahti nooran, wa amami nooran, wa khalfi nooran, wa aj'al fi nafsi nooran, wa 'adhdhim li nooran, waj'al li nooran 'ala noor.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely after completing the Fajr prayer. Raise your hands as you normally would for dua, making heartfelt supplication. Visualize Allah's light filling your heart and surrounding you as you ask for this profound blessing. It's essential to focus on the meaning and the immense mercy of Allah as you utter these words.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication seeks Allah's assistance in illuminating the heart, which is the seat of faith and understanding. By asking for light in our senses and all directions, we are asking for guidance in how we perceive the world, how we listen to guidance, and how we interact with our surroundings. The ultimate request for 'light upon light' signifies an ever-increasing connection to and understanding of the Divine, a state of constant illumination and protection from darkness and misguidance.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach them this supplication for remembrance during the day, just as he used to teach them a Surah from the Qur'an: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannama, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabri, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mawati. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-ma'tham wal-maghram.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.) [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 6368]. Then he mentioned the supplication for the heart and senses: 'Allahumma-j'al fi qalbi nooran... (O Allah, make light in my heart...)' [Narrated by Al-Bukhari, no. 6316].
