Morning Dua for Divine Strength Against Laziness

Morning Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1376

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapability and laziness, from cowardice and old age, and from stinginess. I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-harami, wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabri, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-ma'mati.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is best recited in the morning, after the obligatory Fajr prayer. It's a conscious turning to Allah for strength before the day's challenges begin, especially when feeling the stirrings of laziness or the urge to procrastinate.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full presence. Understand each phrase and the immense reliance it places on Allah. Raise your hands slightly as you make this supplication, a gesture of humility and earnest seeking from your Lord. Try to internalize the meaning of each refuge you seek.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses four key weaknesses that often lead to laziness and inaction: incapability ('ajz), laziness (kasal), cowardice (jubn), and stinginess (buhl). By seeking refuge from these, we are asking Allah to bestow upon us the willpower, energy, courage, and generosity needed to be productive and purposeful. Furthermore, it encompasses seeking protection from the trials of the grave and life/death, highlighting the connection between our worldly actions and our ultimate state. It's a comprehensive request for spiritual and practical fortitude.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach them his supplications as he taught them the Qur'an, saying: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min al-'ajzi wal-kasali, wal-jubni wal-harami, wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min 'adhabi al-qabri, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-ma'ati.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapability and laziness, from cowardice and old age, and from stinginess. I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and from the trials of life and death.)
