O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.
When to Read
This dua is recited in the morning, ideally after the Fajr prayer, as part of the comprehensive morning supplications (Adhkar). It sets a tone for the entire day, asking Allah for protection against harmful actions originating from our senses and inner selves, including the tongue.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a focused heart. It is recommended to raise your hands slightly in supplication as you say it, embodying humility and reliance on Allah. Ensure you pronounce the Arabic clearly and understand its meaning.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua seeks Allah's protection against the potential harms associated with our hearing (listening to gossip or falsehoods), sight (looking at what is forbidden), tongue (backbiting, slander, harsh words), heart (sinful thoughts and intentions), and sexual desires (misuse). By asking for refuge from the 'evil of the tongue,' we are specifically seeking protection from engaging in backbiting (Gheebah) and slander (Buhtan), which are grave sins in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that the most common way people enter Paradise is by fearing Allah and having good character, and the most common way they enter Hellfire is by the mouth and the private parts (Sunan Ibn Majah 4246 - Sahih). Therefore, guarding our tongue is paramount.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5088, Sunan Ibn Majah 3869). This hadith, classified as Hasan by many scholars, highlights the Prophet's ﷺ own practice of seeking comprehensive protection from Allah against the various avenues through which sin can enter our lives.
