Morning Dua for a Sound Heart and a Healthy Body

Morning Adhkar
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5690

O Allah, grant me well-being in my body. O Allah, grant me well-being in my hearing. O Allah, grant me well-being in my sight. There is no god but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. There is no god but You.

Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa Anta. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wal-faqr. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, la ilaha illa Anta.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is part of the morning adhkar (remembrances). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite it three times each morning and evening, asking Allah for comprehensive protection and well-being. Reciting it after Fajr prayer, before the day's demands fully set in, is an excellent way to start your day with a focus on Allah's protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and full presence of heart. Utter the words clearly, focusing on the meaning of each request: asking for physical health ('afini fi badani, fi sam'i, fi basari), seeking refuge from disbelief and poverty (al-kufri wal-faqr), and protection from the grave's torment ('adhab al-qabr). Repeating it three times as the Prophet ﷺ did amplifies its significance and our reliance on Allah.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound request for holistic well-being. It asks Allah for health in our bodies, our senses of hearing and sight, which are vital tools for experiencing life and worshipping Him. It also seeks refuge from two major spiritual and worldly afflictions: disbelief, which leads to eternal punishment, and poverty, which can lead to despair and unlawful means. Furthermore, it prays for protection from the trial of the grave, a crucial phase of the hereafter. By reciting this, we acknowledge our utter dependence on Allah for protection, health, and spiritual soundness.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Bakrah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever says three times in the morning: 'Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari, la ilaha illa Anta. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-kufri wal-faqr. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr, la ilaha illa Anta.' (O Allah, grant me health in my body. O Allah, grant me health in my hearing. O Allah, grant me health in my sight. None has the right to be worshipped but You. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from disbelief and poverty. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. None has the right to be worshipped but You), then if he dies on that day, he dies a good death (martyrdom), and if he lives through the day, he will be safe from it (i.e. the torment)."
