Dua Upon Seeing One's Reflection: Acknowledging Allah's Beauty and Our Imperfection

Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 22562

اللَّهُمَّ أَحْسَنْتَ خَلْقِي فَأَحْسِنْ خُلُقِي

O Allah, You have made my form beautiful, so make my character beautiful.

Allahumma ahsanta khalqi fa ahsin khulqi

When to Read

This dua is recommended to be recited when one looks at their reflection in a mirror. It's a moment to pause and reflect, not just on our physical appearance, but on the blessings of Allah (Glory be to Him) in shaping us.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, looking at your reflection. Begin by acknowledging Allah's perfection in creation and then humbly ask Him to beautify your inner self, your character and manners. This isn't about vanity, but about connecting with the Creator through His signs.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua connects our outward appearance, a creation of Allah, to our inward character. It’s a recognition that true beauty lies in pleasing Allah through good conduct and manners. By asking for our character to be beautified, we are asking for tawfiq (Allah's help) to embody Islamic ethics, humility, patience, kindness, and all other praiseworthy traits. It serves as a reminder to be grateful for our physical form while striving for spiritual and moral excellence, which are of far greater importance in the sight of Allah.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'What a man says when he looks in the mirror: Allahumma ahsanta khalqi fa ahsin khulqi (O Allah, You have made my form beautiful, so make my character beautiful).' (Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) and recorded in Musnad Ahmad, and other collections with similar wording.) *Note: While this hadith is Hasan, the principle of making dua and reflecting on Allah's blessings is deeply rooted in the Quran and Sunnah.*
