Dua Upon Seeing One's Reflection: Acknowledging Allah's Bounty

Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 376

All praise is due to Allah alone, and prayers and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. O Allah, just as You have beautified my creation, so beautify my character, and grant me the ability to deal with people in a way that You love.

Al-hamdu lillahi wahdah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala man la nabiyya ba'dah. Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi, warzuqni mu'amalatan-nasi bima tuhibb.

It serves as a moment to acknowledge Allah's blessings on our outward appearance and to seek His help in perfecting our inner character.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and humility after observing your reflection. Focus on the meaning of the words, recognizing that all beauty and good qualities are from Allah. It's a personal reflection, so recite it quietly.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua reminds us that our outward appearance is a blessing from Allah, and we should be grateful for it. More importantly, it shifts the focus from mere vanity to seeking inner excellence, asking Allah to perfect our character just as He has perfected our physical form. It also promotes a positive and pleasing interaction with others, aligning our conduct with Allah's pleasure.

Source & Authentication

The narration concerning this specific dua is found in Sunan Ibn Majah. While the exact wording and its attribution as a direct sunnah dua for looking in the mirror can be debated among scholars, the sentiment of seeking Allah’s help in perfecting character alongside acknowledging His blessings on creation is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings. Many scholars recommend this or similar supplications for such moments, emphasizing the importance of gratitude and self-improvement. There are other narrations regarding looking in the mirror, such as the Prophet (peace be upon him) saying: > **Arabic:** اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، اَللَّهُمَّ كَمَا أَحْسَنْتَ خَلْقِي فَأَحْسِنْ خُلُقِي > **Translation:** "Praise be to Allah. O Allah, as You have made my creation beautiful, so make my character and manners beautiful." > **Transliteration:** *Al-hamdu lillah, Allahumma kama ahsanta khalqi fa ahsin khuluqi* This version is also found in Musnad Ahmad and other collections and serves a similar purpose of connecting outward perfection with inward refinement.
