Dua for the Mirror: Reflecting Inner Piety

Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 23982

اللَّهُمَّ كَمَا حَسَّنْتَ خَلْقِي فَحَسِّنْ خُلُقِي

O Allah, just as You have made my physical form beautiful, make my character beautiful as well.

Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi, fa hassin khuluqi

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recommended to be recited when looking in the mirror. It's a moment to acknowledge Allah's creation of our outward form and to simultaneously ask Him to perfect our inner self – our character, manners, and actions.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity while looking at your reflection. The intention is to connect the outward appearance with the inward state, seeking excellence in both, and prioritizing the latter as it is what truly matters to Allah (Exalted is He).

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication beautifully encapsulates the Islamic emphasis on the inner self. While we appreciate the blessings of a sound and pleasing physical form, the true measure of a believer lies in their character and deeds. By asking Allah to beautify our character, we are seeking to embody the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, who was sent to perfect good manners. It reminds us that our actions and our inner state should reflect the beauty we see on the outside, and ideally, surpass it.

Source & Authentication

The narration states: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say when he looked in the mirror: Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi, fa hassin khuluqi' (O Allah, just as You have made my physical form beautiful, make my character beautiful as well).
