Dua for Strengthening Conviction in Allah's Decree Upon Seeing One's Reflection

Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 23986

O Allah, You have made my form excellent, so make my character excellent, and guard me from the evils of this world and its horrors, and make me love meeting You, and keep me from seeking that for which I have no excuse, and make my contentment within myself, and my desire in the Hereafter.

Allahumma ahsanta khalqi fahassin khuluqi wa-hrusni min sharri-d-dunya wa-ahwaliha wa-habbibni ila liqa'ika wa-jannibni min talabi ma la 'udhra li fihi waj'al ghina-ya fi nafsi wa-raghbati fi akhirati.

When to Read

This dua is specifically recommended to be recited when looking at one's reflection, particularly in a mirror. It's a moment to reflect on Allah's creation of our physical selves and to ask for inner spiritual perfection, protection from worldly temptations, and a yearning for the Hereafter.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a thoughtful heart, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. It's best recited immediately after observing one's reflection. The act of looking at oneself can be a reminder of Allah's blessings and a prompt for self-improvement and spiritual focus.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua encourages gratitude for Allah's creation of our physical form ('ahsanta khalqi'). It seeks spiritual refinement by asking for good character ('fahassin khuluqi'), aligning our inner selves with our outer appearance. It also serves as a shield against worldly temptations and anxieties ('wa-hrusni min sharri-d-dunya wa-ahwaliha') and cultivates a desire for the ultimate meeting with our Creator ('wa-habbibni ila liqa'ika'). Furthermore, it promotes contentment ('waj'al ghina-ya fi nafsi') and a focus on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter ('wa-raghbati fi akhirati').

Source & Authentication

It is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to say when he looked in the mirror: 'Allahumma ahsanta khalqi fahassin khuluqi wa-hrusni min sharri-d-dunya wa-ahwaliha wa-habbibni ila liqa'ika wa-jannibni min talabi ma la 'udhra li fihi waj'al ghina-ya fi nafsi wa-raghbati fi akhirati.' (O Allah, You have made my form excellent, so make my character excellent, and guard me from the evils of this world and its horrors, and make me love meeting You, and keep me from seeking that for which I have no excuse, and make my contentment within myself, and my desire in the Hereafter.)
