اللَّهُمَّ كَمَا حَسَّنْتَ خَلْقِي فَحَسِّنْ خُلُقِي وَحَرِّمْ عَلَى النَّارِ وَجْهِي
O Allah, just as You have made my form beautiful, make my character beautiful, and forbid my face from the Fire.
Allahumma kama hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi wa harim 'alan-nari wajhi
When to Read
This beautiful dua is recited when looking at oneself in the mirror. While the specific wording is for personal reflection, its essence can be extended to a father or mother looking at their children. Imagine looking at your child's reflection, perhaps after they've dressed up or simply seeing their innocent face, and making this invocation for them. You can adapt the intention: 'O Allah, as You have made my child beautiful, make their character beautiful, and protect them from the Fire.' It's a moment to pause and imbue a prayer for their well-being, both internal and external.
How to Read
The primary etiquette is sincerity and presence of heart. When you look in the mirror, take a moment to appreciate Allah's creation and then make this dua for yourself, or adapt it for your children. Speak the words clearly and with conviction, focusing on the meaning of seeking inner beauty (good character) and ultimate protection from hellfire. It's a personal moment of remembrance and supplication.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses seeking Allah's favor in both our outward appearance and, more importantly, our inner state. By asking for good character ('hassin khuluqi'), we are asking for the qualities that please Allah and lead to a righteous life. The request to be protected from the Fire ('harim 'alan-nari wajhi') is a profound plea for salvation in the Hereafter. When extended to children, it's a powerful way to instill blessings and protection upon them, seeking Allah's mercy for their current and future state.

Narrated Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to say when he looked at himself in the mirror: 'O Allah, just as You have made my form beautiful, make my character beautiful, and forbid my face from the Fire.' (Musnad Ahmad 21007). Although this hadith is directly for the person looking at themselves, the principle of seeking Allah's blessings and protection for one's children is a fundamental aspect of parenting in Islam. Therefore, parents can adopt the spirit of this dua when observing their children.
