Dua for Reflection in the Mirror

Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3867

O Allah, You who separate the heart, and give sight to the eyes, guide my heart, and place a barrier between me and Satan, and between Satan's deeds, and between (me and) Hellfire.

Allahumma fariq al-qalb, wa absir al-basar, wahdi qalbi, wa hul bayni wa bayn ash-shaytan, wa bayn 'amal ash-shaytan, wa bayn Jahannam.

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant when you catch your reflection and it prompts a deeper contemplation of your life, your faith, and your ultimate destination. It's a moment to pause, reflect on the transient nature of this world and the importance of preparing for the Hereafter. Use it after you notice something that makes you think about your spiritual state.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep contemplation. As you say it, try to visualize Allah placing a barrier between you and Shaytan's whispers and temptations, and between you and the path that leads to Jahannam. Let the words resonate with a genuine desire for Allah's guidance and protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful supplication seeks Allah's divine intervention in several crucial areas: guiding the heart, illuminating the sight (both physical and spiritual), and creating a protective shield against the pervasive influence of Shaytan and his temptations. By asking Allah to 'separate the heart' and 'give sight to the eyes,' we are essentially asking for clarity of purpose and the ability to discern right from wrong. The dua aims to strengthen our connection with Allah, protect us from succumbing to evil deeds, and ultimately save us from the Hellfire.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach his companions to supplicate in the following manner when they looked at the mirror: 'Allahumma fariq al-qalb, wa absir al-basar, wahdi qalbi, wa hul bayni wa bayn ash-shaytan, wa bayn 'amal ash-shaytan, wa bayn Jahannam.' (O Allah, You who separate the heart, and give sight to the eyes, guide my heart, and place a barrier between me and Satan, and between Satan's deeds, and between (me and) Hellfire.)
