Dua for Recognizing the Divine Artistry in the Reflection of One's Children

Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 22347

O Allah, You have made my form beautiful, so make my character beautiful and forbid my face from the Fire. O Allah, You have made my creation beautiful, so make my character beautiful.

Allahumma innaka jammalta khalqi, fa hassin khulqi, wa harim 'alan-nari wajhi. Allahumma ahsanta khalqi, fa ahsin khulqi.

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant when looking at your child, especially when they are young and their features are still developing. It's also fitting when reflecting on their growth and character development. Recite it after Fajr or any time you observe your child and feel a surge of gratitude for Allah's creation, recognizing His artistry in their very being. You can also make this dua when you look in the mirror yourself, praying for both physical and moral beauty, and extending that prayer to your children.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and heartfelt contemplation. Imagine Allah's creation unfolding in your child's features and disposition. Place your hand on your child's head or shoulder as you recite, or recite it while looking at them. The essence is to connect with the Divine Creator and acknowledge His blessings through your child. Say it with hope and trust in Allah's response.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua helps foster a deep sense of gratitude for Allah's blessings in the form of our children. It encourages us to see them not just as a physical creation, but as a manifestation of Divine artistry. By praying for their good character (khulq) alongside their physical form (khalq), we are focusing on their holistic well-being, aiming for them to be pleasing to Allah in both their appearance and their actions. The prayer 'wa harim 'alan-nari wajhi' (forbid my face from the Fire) adds a layer of seeking protection for oneself and implicitly for one's progeny from the Hellfire, a profound aspiration for righteous offspring.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to supplicate often with this dua: 'Allahumma, You have beautified my countenance, so beautify my character.' And in another narration: 'O Allah, You have made my creation beautiful, so make my character beautiful.' (Musnad Ahmad 22347, graded Hasan by scholars). While this specific narration is reported about the Prophet's own supplication for himself, its meaning and essence are universally applicable, and a parent can certainly adapt it with the intention of supplicating for their child, or reflecting on Allah's creation in them.
