O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your favors, and from the change of Your protection, and from the sudden affliction of Your wrath, and from all that You are displeased with. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done and from the evil of what I have not done.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri ma 'amiltu wa min sharri ma lam a'mal.
When to Read
This powerful dua is specifically recommended to be recited when looking in the mirror. While the immediate concern might be vanity or self-admiration leading to arrogance, this dua encompasses a broader seeking of Allah's protection. When we look at ourselves, we are reminded of Allah's blessings and our own shortcomings. This dua helps us acknowledge our dependence on Allah and seek His refuge from any harm that might arise from our own actions, or lack thereof, and from the displeasure of Allah Himself.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely with the intention of seeking Allah's protection. Focus on the meaning of the words, acknowledging your own weakness and Allah's absolute power and mercy. It's recommended to recite it once after looking at yourself in the mirror, before turning away. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this comprehensive supplication to seek refuge in Allah from various forms of spiritual and material harm.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a comprehensive seeking of refuge. It protects against the loss of divine favors (ni'mah), the reversal of well-being (afiyah), sudden divine punishment (niqmah), and Allah's displeasure (sakhat). It also covers protection from the evil consequences of our past actions and the potential harm from things we failed to do. By reciting this, we are essentially entrusting ourselves to Allah's care, seeking His shield against unseen evils and the negative impacts of our own selves.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to teach his companions, in the manner of the Qur'an, to seek refuge in Allah from the torment of the Fire and from seeking refuge in Allah from seeking refuge in Allah from the torment of the Fire and from the torment of the grave and from the trial of the Dajjal and from the trial of life and the trial of death. He also taught them to seek refuge in Allah from the passing away of His favours, and from the change of His protection, and from the sudden vengeance of His wrath, and from all that displeases Him. He said: 'Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the passing away of Your favours, and the change of Your protection, and the sudden vengeance of Your wrath, and all that displeases You.' (Sahih Muslim 2717). While the context here mentions seeking refuge from various afflictions, the specific wording taught by the Prophet ﷺ is a powerful protection against any harm, including that which might arise from looking at oneself in the mirror and becoming heedless or arrogant.
