Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithJami` at-Tirmidhi 3418

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ حَسَّنْتَ خَلْقِي فَحَسِّنْ خُلُقِي

O Allah, You have made my creation beautiful, so make my character beautiful.

Allahumma anta hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when you look into the mirror. It’s a moment of reflection, not just on your outward appearance, but on the profound truth that your physical form is a gift, a perfect creation from Allah. It’s a chance to remember the *amanah* (trust or stewardship) we bear over our bodies and souls. As you observe the details of your physical self, let it be a trigger to acknowledge Allah's flawless design and to then turn your attention inward, asking Him to perfect your inner character – which is the true essence of our being and the measure of our stewardship.

How to Read

Recite this dua with a heart full of gratitude for the physical blessings bestowed upon you. Understand that your outward appearance is a manifestation of Allah's creative power, beyond your control. The second part of the dua, however, is a profound supplication for what *is* within your realm of effort and intention: your character. When you say, 'so make my character beautiful,' do so with sincerity, envisioning the kind of character you aspire to have – one that reflects the beauty of Islam, full of patience, kindness, integrity, and humility. Let it be a daily commitment to actively work on improving your *akhlaq* (manners and morals), knowing that Allah assists those who strive.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua fosters a deep sense of **gratitude** to Allah for His perfect creation, redirecting focus from mere vanity to divine artistry. It cultivates **humility**, reminding us that our physical attributes are not earned but bestowed. More importantly, it shifts our attention to the more significant aspect of our being: our **character**. By asking Allah to beautify our character, we are actively seeking His aid in fulfilling the *amanah* of our existence. This practice helps us to develop **self-awareness**, encouraging us to constantly assess and improve our morals and manners, knowing that beautiful character is more enduring and valued by Allah than fleeting physical beauty. It helps us embody the prophetic ideal that our outward form is a blessing, and our inward character is a spiritual striving.

Muhammad bin Bashar narrated to us: "Sufyan narrated to us from Mas'oodi, from Abu Wa'il, from 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that when the Prophet ﷺ looked in the mirror, he would say: > **Arabic:** اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ حَسَّنْتَ خَلْقِي فَحَسِّنْ خُلُقِي > > **Translation:** "O Allah, You have made my creation beautiful, so make my character beautiful." > > **Transliteration:** *Allahumma anta hassanta khalqi fa hassin khuluqi* He (Imam Tirmidhi) said: This Hadith is Hasan Gharib." — Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3418
