Looking in Mirror
Hasan HadithMusnad Ahmad 22568

اَللّٰهُمَّ أَحْسَنْتَ خَلْقِيْ فَأَحْسِنْ خُلُقِيْ

O Allah, You have made my form beautiful, so make my character beautiful.

Allahumma ahsanta khalqi fa ahsin khuluqi

When to Read

This dua is a beautiful supplication to recite whenever you look at your reflection, particularly in the morning or before starting your day. It's a moment to acknowledge Allah's creation of our physical selves and to actively seek His help in perfecting our inner selves – our character, our manners, and our spiritual state. Seeing our outward appearance can be a potent reminder to also tend to our inward condition.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and awareness of its meaning. As you look in the mirror, visualize yourself not just as a physical form, but as a soul that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has entrusted you to nurture and improve. Let the words flow from your heart, seeking Allah's assistance in cultivating virtues like patience, kindness, honesty, and humility, thereby balancing your outward appearance with an inner beauty that truly pleases Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is profound in its comprehensiveness. It acknowledges Allah's perfect creation of our physical bodies ('ahsanta khalqi'), showing gratitude and recognizing His artistry. More importantly, it directly asks Allah to perfect our character and manners ('fa ahsin khuluqi'). This seeking of inner beauty is what truly reflects a believer's connection to their Creator. A beautiful character is a sign of a healthy spiritual life, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself emphasized its immense weight: 'The best of you are those who have the best of manners and character.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3556). By asking Allah to improve our character, we are striving for a state where our inner and outer selves are in harmony, leading to a more purposeful and pleasing life to Allah.
