O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This powerful supplication is especially relevant when feelings of loneliness or isolation begin to weigh you down. Recite it when you feel overwhelmed by worries (hamm) and sadness (hazan) that can creep in during times of solitude. It's a way to proactively seek Allah's protection against the emotional burdens that can make isolation feel like a prison.
How to Read
This is a profound prayer that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself would often recite. When you feel the weight of solitude becoming heavy, find a quiet moment, perhaps in your own space, and recite this dua with sincere conviction. Raise your hands (if possible and appropriate for the setting) and pour your heart out to Allah, truly seeking His refuge. Reflect on each phrase, understanding the specific difficulties you are asking Allah to shield you from. Let the repetition itself be a form of dhikr, a remembrance that keeps your heart connected to Him, transforming your inner state.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua addresses the core anxieties that can make solitude difficult: distress, sorrow, helplessness, lethargy, fear, and being indebted or oppressed. By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we are essentially asking Him to transform our perception and experience of isolation. Instead of succumbing to negative emotions, we are asking for His strength to overcome them. This allows us to utilize our alone time for reflection, remembrance of Allah, and personal growth, rather than letting it lead us astray.
