Dua for the Grief of Losing a Deceased Spouse and Alleviating Loneliness

Loneliness & Isolation
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 935

O Allah, forgive my father, raise his station, and leave behind those who would follow him. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not try us after him.

Allahumma ighfir li abee, warfa' darajatahu, wa akhlifhu fee 'aqibihi, waghfir lana wa lahu ya Rabbal 'alameen. Allahumma la tahrimna ajrahu wa la taftinna ba'dahu.

When to Read

This supplication is particularly poignant when one is experiencing the acute grief and overwhelming loneliness that follows the passing of a beloved spouse. Recite it during times of deep sadness, upon remembering your spouse, or after finishing the Quran for them. It can be a source of solace in the quiet hours of the night or after any prayer.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt plea to Allah. Imagine you are speaking directly to your Lord, expressing your pain and your hope for His mercy and support. Raise your hands in supplication, as is the Sunnah when making dua. Focus on the meaning of the words, asking Allah to forgive your departed spouse, elevate their status in Paradise, and ease your own burden of loneliness and grief. It's a personal conversation with the One who understands your deepest feelings.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua offers immense spiritual comfort by connecting you with Allah during a time of profound loss. It allows you to actively seek mercy for your deceased spouse, a beautiful act of ongoing love and Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). By asking Allah not to deprive you of their reward and not to test you after their passing, you are entrusting your affairs to Him, seeking protection from further hardship and solace for your grief. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that making dua for the deceased benefits both the living and the dead, strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and mercy within the Ummah.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.' (Sahih Muslim 1631). This principle extends to making dua for the deceased, as exemplified by the Prophet's own supplications and his teaching to his companions.
