Dua for Solitude and Isolation: Seeking Allah's Comfort

Loneliness & Isolation
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.

When to Read

This dua is particularly potent when you feel overwhelmed by loneliness, disconnected from others, or burdened by difficulties that make you feel isolated. Recite it during moments of quiet reflection, when you're unable to find solace in human company, or when a sense of despair begins to creep in. It's a shield against the internal struggles that arise from feeling alone.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely, focusing on the meaning of each phrase. Raise your hands as you would in other supplications, and utter it with a humble heart, acknowledging your reliance on Allah (Glory be to Him). It can be recited at any time, but is especially beneficial after obligatory prayers or during the quiet hours of the night when the world is asleep and your connection with Allah feels most intimate.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive supplication, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, addresses four critical pairs of emotional and practical burdens. By seeking refuge in Allah from worry and grief, we acknowledge His power to ease our minds and hearts. Protection from helplessness and laziness empowers us to take action. Shielding ourselves from cowardice and stinginess helps us develop courage and generosity. Finally, seeking refuge from debt and oppression guards against significant worldly distress. When feeling alone, this dua reminds us that our ultimate support and refuge is Allah, and He is sufficient for us, no matter our circumstances.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet ﷺ used to invoke Allah saying: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from helplessness and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men. He was asked why he so often invoked these words. He replied: Allah's Apostle ﷺ does not care about something, but that he invokes these words (of invocation). (Sahih al-Bukhari 6369)
