Dua for Finding Belonging and Purpose in a New Profession

Loneliness & Isolation
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا.

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provision, and accepted deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.

When to Read

Recite this dua at the beginning of your workday, especially when starting a new role or feeling overwhelmed and disconnected. It's a powerful way to center yourself and ask Allah for guidance and success in your professional endeavors. Make it a habit before diving into tasks, or during moments of reflection when you feel a lack of purpose.

How to Read

Begin with sincere intention (niyyah), acknowledging your reliance on Allah. Raise your hands in supplication if possible, and recite this dua with humility and conviction. Focus on the meaning of each phrase: seeking knowledge that benefits you and others, sustenance that is pure and lawful, and work that is accepted by Allah. Reflect on your feelings of disconnection and channel them into a heartfelt plea for divine assistance and a sense of belonging.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication, taught by our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is comprehensive. It seeks knowledge that is useful and leads to good, provision that is lawful and wholesome, and deeds that are accepted by Allah, meaning they are performed sincerely for His sake and in accordance with His commands. For someone feeling socially disconnected, seeking beneficial knowledge can open doors to understanding and connection within the profession. Asking for pure provision can alleviate anxieties related to financial stability. And requesting accepted deeds directly addresses finding purpose by aligning one's work with divine approval, fostering a sense of meaning and contribution.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning, the angels supplicate for him, saying: 'O Allah, give Your servant more provision and wealth.' But the devils say: 'O Allah, cause him to be stingy and to waste his wealth.' The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said: 'If any one of you asks Allah for knowledge, Allah will give him knowledge.' And he would supplicate in the morning: 'O Allah, I ask You for knowledge that is beneficial, and sustenance that is pure, and deeds that are accepted.' [Narrated by Ibn Majah in Sunan Ibn Majah, Kitab al-Buyu', Bab al-Tijarah (Chapter on Trade), Hadith 925. Al-Albani authenticated it as Hasan.]
