Dua for Alleviating Sadness and Despair

Loneliness & Isolation
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6369

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This profound dua is a lifeline for anyone feeling overwhelmed by sadness, despair, or the heavy weight of loneliness. Recite it especially when you feel these emotions creeping in, or at any time you need to remind yourself of Allah's protection. It’s particularly effective when you feel isolated, turning your focus back to your Creator who is always present.

How to Read

Utter this dua with sincerity and a sincere heart. Raising your hands during the supplication is a beautiful Sunnah that enhances the feeling of reliance on Allah. Imagine each word a shield against the negativity that loneliness can bring. Believe that Allah, in His infinite mercy, hears your plea and will respond in the best way possible.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this comprehensive dua to seek Allah's refuge from four key pairs of afflictions that can severely impact our well-being: worry and grief (which often stem from difficult circumstances or loneliness), helplessness and lethargy (which can make us feel stuck), fear and miserliness (which can hinder our interactions and generosity), and finally, overwhelming debt and being overcome by people (which can lead to humiliation and distress). By seeking refuge in Allah from these, we are essentially asking for His strength, peace, and ability to cope with life's challenges, including the pain of isolation.
