Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Strength to Resist Negative Thoughts

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 972

In the name of Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask of Your bounty. O Allah, protect me from the accursed devil.

Bismillahi, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik. Allahumma 'ismani minash-shaytanir-rajim.

When to Read

This dua is recited when leaving the Masjid (mosque). It's particularly poignant as we step back into the world, carrying the spiritual nourishment from prayer. It serves as a shield, asking Allah to preserve the purity of our intention and protect us from the whispers of Shaytan that can creep in as we re-engage with daily life, including negative thoughts or temptations that might arise.

How to Read

Recite this dua after completing your prayer and preparing to exit the Masjid. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) as you step out. It's a moment of transition, asking for Allah's divine protection as you move from the sacred space of the mosque back into the wider world. The emphasis is on seeking Allah's grace and His shielding from the evil whispers that can plague the mind.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful supplication for divine protection. By invoking Allah's name and seeking His bounty, you are acknowledging your reliance on Him. Asking to be protected from the 'accursed devil' directly addresses the source of many negative and intrusive thoughts, as well as temptations that can distract from righteous paths. It helps fortify the heart and mind with the remembrance of Allah, making it harder for Shaytan to gain a foothold.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "When one of you enters the Masjid, let him say: 'O Allah, open to me the doors of Your mercy.' And when he leaves, let him say: 'O Allah, I ask of Your bounty. O Allah, protect me from the accursed devil.'" (Sunan Abi Dawud 972 - Sahih)
