Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Strength to Resist Gossip

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 1278

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

O Allah, I ask You from Your grace.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik

When to Read

This dua is recited upon exiting the Masjid. It's particularly relevant as we re-enter the world outside, where social interactions can easily lead to backbiting and idle talk. Reciting this as you leave is a conscious effort to seek Allah's help in navigating these environments with grace and purity of speech.

How to Read

Recite this supplication after completing your prayer and any personal dhikr or dua within the Masjid, just as you are about to step out. It is generally recommended to exit with your left foot first after such supplications, as this is the Sunnah for entering with the right foot. The focus is on seeking Allah's abundant blessings as you transition from the sacred space back into daily life.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua, while seemingly simple, is a profound request for Allah's continuous provision and favor. By asking 'from Your grace,' we acknowledge that all good comes from Him. When leaving the Masjid, this prayer can be understood as seeking protection from the potential ills of the outside world, including the temptation to engage in gossip or idle speech. It's a way of carrying the sanctity of the Masjid's atmosphere with us, asking Allah to shield our tongues and our hearts from anything displeasing to Him.

Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When one of you enters my Masjid, let him send blessings upon the Prophet (ﷺ) and say: 'Allahumma iftah li abwaba fadlik.' (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your grace). And when he goes out, let him say: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.' (O Allah, I ask You from Your grace).
