Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Help to Fulfill Responsibilities

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1386

In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask of Your bounty. O Allah, protect me from the accursed devil.

Bismillahi, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik. Allahumma a'idhni minash-Shaytanir-rajeem.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited specifically when leaving the masjid after having offered salah. It's a transition from the spiritual haven of the mosque back into the worldly life, a moment to ask Allah for continued blessings and protection as we re-engage with our responsibilities.

How to Read

Ideally, one would pause briefly after exiting the masjid, perhaps near the door or after taking a few steps. Begin with 'Bismillahi' (In the name of Allah), acknowledging His presence in your journey. Follow with 'was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah' (and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah), sending salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Then, raise your hands slightly (though not in a formal du'a posture) and sincerely ask 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik' (O Allah, I ask of Your bounty), seeking Allah's continuous provision and grace. Finally, seek refuge, 'Allahumma a'idhni minash-Shaytanir-rajeem' (O Allah, protect me from the accursed devil), recognizing that the world outside the masjid presents its own challenges and temptations.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a profound turning point. By asking for Allah's bounty, you're not just leaving the prayer; you're asking for His continued blessings in your work, family, and all aspects of your life. Seeking refuge from Shaytan reminds us that our spiritual journey continues even after leaving the sacred space of the masjid. It’s about carrying the barakah of the prayer into our daily lives and maintaining our connection with Allah throughout the day.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When one of you enters the masjid, let him send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and say: "Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik" (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy). And when he leaves, let him send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and say: "Allahumma a'idhni minash-Shaytanir-rajeem" (O Allah, protect me from the accursed devil).' Note: The version commonly recited upon entering is 'Allahumma aftah li abwaba rahmatik' and upon leaving is 'Allahumma a'idhni minash-Shaytanir-rajeem'. However, some narrations mention sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ at both times, as seen in Sahih Muslim 1386, which includes: 'Bismillahi, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik. Allahumma a'idhni minash-Shaytanir-rajeem.' This combination reflects a comprehensive approach to seeking Allah's favour and protection.
