Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Protection from Gossip and Rumors

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1300

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.

O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.

When to Read

This dua is recited when leaving the Masjid, after completing your prayers and supplications inside. It's a beautiful way to transition from the sacred space back into the world, carrying the blessings of the Masjid with you and seeking divine favor for your endeavors outside.

How to Read

Upon exiting the Masjid, after you have completed your intended worship, turn your attention towards seeking Allah's grace. Recite this dua with sincerity, raising your hands slightly if you wish, and reflecting on Allah's infinite generosity. It's a moment to remember that all provision and success come from Him.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this dua as a way to seek Allah's grace and favor as we leave a place of worship. While this specific hadith doesn't directly mention protection from gossip or rumors, the act of asking for Allah's 'fadl' (bounty, grace, favor) encompasses seeking protection from all harms and seeking guidance towards good. By seeking Allah's favor as we leave the Masjid, we are essentially asking Him to protect us from the negative influences and trials of the outside world, including harmful speech and baseless rumors, and to guide us to positive interactions.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'When anyone of you finishes praying the two Rak'ahs of (the prayer of) Fajr, let him say: O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty. (Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik). For it is a cause for seeking (your provision).' (Note: While this hadith specifically mentions after Fajr, the principle of seeking Allah's bounty upon leaving a prayer, and by extension, the Masjid itself, is applicable more broadly. Many scholars extend this practice to other times of leaving the Masjid. For leaving the Masjid specifically, the more detailed dua is 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik wa al-hidayata wal-taqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina,' which is narrated by Muslim with the wording 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan' after the Salam of the prayer. However, the concise 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik' is also a valid supplication to make when leaving the Masjid, encompassing a general plea for Allah's grace and protection.)
