In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You for Your bounty. O Allah, protect me from the accursed devil. O Allah, forgive me my sins and open for me the doors of Your bounty. And I seek refuge with You, O Allah, from the accursed devil and from his whispers.
Bismillahi, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik. Allahumma 'ismni minash-Shaytanir-rajim. Allahumma-ghfir li dhunubi wa-ftah li abwab fadlik. Wa a'udhu bika Allahumma minash-Shaytanir-rajim wa min an yuhawirin.
When to Read
This beautiful dua is recited when leaving the Masjid after having offered salah. It's a moment of transition, moving from a state of worship and closeness to Allah back into the world, and this supplication helps us carry that sanctity with us.
How to Read
As you step out of the Masjid, pause for a moment. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) and acknowledge the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with 'was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah' (and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah). Then, make the supplication. It's recommended to move with your left foot first when leaving the Masjid, just as you entered with your right foot.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is comprehensive. It seeks Allah's bounty and provisions, asks for protection from the accursed Shaytan, and for forgiveness of sins. It's a prayer that encompasses our worldly needs, our spiritual protection, and our eternal salvation, all within the blessed context of leaving Allah's house.
Source & Authentication
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: 'When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) left the Masjid, he would say: Bismillahi, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik. Allahumma 'ismni minash-Shaytanir-rajim.' And when he entered the Masjid, he would say: 'Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik.' (O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.) [Sunan Ibn Majah 771]. The portion related to leaving the Masjid, including seeking forgiveness and refuge, is also a well-established practice and a beautiful extension of this theme.
