Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Help to Be a Source of Benefit

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1300a

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.

Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik

When to Read

This dua is recited as you are exiting the masjid. After completing your prayers or other acts of worship within the mosque, as you prepare to step out and re-enter the affairs of the world, this is the perfect moment to ask Allah to sustain you with His immense grace.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity, focusing your intention on seeking Allah's grace not just for yourself, but for the ability to be a source of good in the world. Imagine yourself carrying the barakah of the masjid out with you into your daily interactions. It is recommended to exit the masjid with the left foot after reciting this.

Virtues & Benefits

This seemingly simple dua is profound. By asking 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik,' we are acknowledging that all good comes from Allah alone. It's a recognition of our dependence on Him and a request for His continued blessings, which enables us to serve others. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us this specific dua to be said when leaving the market, but its principle extends beautifully to leaving the house of Allah. Just as the market is a place of worldly dealings, our world outside the masjid is where we are meant to embody the teachings we learn inside. Asking for Allah's bounty here is asking for the means and the ability to be a benefit, reflecting the light of Islam in our conduct and actions.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When any one of you enters a marketplace and says: 'La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, yuhyi wa yumitu, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir' (There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, His is the dominion and His is the praise, He gives life and He causes death, and He is powerful over all things), Allah will write for him a million good deeds, and will erase from him a million bad deeds, and will raise him a million ranks, and will build for him a house in Paradise." (Then he said): "And it is the worst of the marketplaces, so let him say it when he leaves it." (This indicates the virtue of this dhikr, and the narration in Muslim 1300a mentions the specific dua 'Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik' when leaving the market, the principle of seeking bounty and benefit applies here).
