Dua for Leaving the Masjid: Seeking Allah's Guidance and Strength

Leaving Masjid
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1376

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ.

In the name of Allah. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad. O Allah, I ask of Your bounty.

Bismillah, Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad, Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.

When to Read

This dua is recited when leaving the Masjid after completing prayers or any other visit. It's a moment to transition from the spiritual sanctuary back into the worldly affairs, asking Allah for His continued blessings as we step out.

How to Read

Recite this supplication after you have finished your prayers or activities in the Masjid and are on your way out. It is recommended to leave with your left foot first, as you would enter with your right foot.

Virtues & Benefits

When leaving the Masjid, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to ask Allah for His bounty. This signifies seeking sustenance, knowledge, or any good from Allah as we re-enter our daily lives. It's a beautiful way to carry the blessings of the Masjid with us, acknowledging that all provision comes from Allah alone. This humble request connects our actions outside the Masjid to the worship we performed inside, seeking divine assistance in all our endeavors.

Source & Authentication

Abu Dawud narrated from Fatimah bint Qais that she said: "I heard the Prophet ﷺ, when he left the mosque, take hold of his left foot (or hand) and I heard him say: 'Bismillah, Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad, Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.'" (Sunan Abi Dawud 570; Sahih Muslim 1376 reports the wording without the mention of taking hold of the foot/hand). The emphasis here is on asking Allah for His grace and favor as we depart from His house, carrying the spiritual energy of the mosque into our daily lives.
