Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This powerful supplication is recommended to be recited when you step out of your home with the intention of going to the masjid for prayer. Imagine yourself closing your front door, taking a moment to pause and connect with Allah before you embark on this blessed journey.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. As you say 'Bismillah,' remember that you are invoking Allah's name for protection and blessing. When you say 'tawakkaltu 'alallah,' visualize yourself placing all your reliance on Him for your journey and your prayer. Finally, 'wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' affirms your understanding that no movement or strength is possible without His will, fostering humility and dependence.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised a beautiful reward for reciting this dua upon leaving home: 'It will be said to him: You are guided, defended, and your needs are met.' He ﷺ also said: 'And he is casting off his enemy.' This means that when you say this, angels will guide you, protect you from harm, and fulfill your needs. It also signifies that your enemies will be kept away from you.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whoever says when he leaves his house (for the Friday prayer or any other prayer): > **Arabic:** بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ > **Translation:** In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah. It will be said to him: 'You are guided, defended and your needs are met.' So the devil will be away from him. (And another devil will say to him: 'What can you do with a man who has been guided, defended and his needs met?') Sahih Muslim 2708 also mentions a similar narration attributed to the Prophet ﷺ: 'When a person leaves his house saying: 'In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah,' it is said to him: 'You have been sufficed, protected and guided.' Satan will move away from him.'
