Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 134

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when leaving one's home, especially when embarking on a journey that requires courage and reliance on Allah. For reconciling feuding families, this act itself is a form of 'jihad' in the path of Allah, seeking to mend broken ties and bring peace. Reciting this before stepping out signifies your intention and dependence on Allah for success in this noble, yet challenging, endeavor.

How to Read

Recite this dua aloud or softly just as you are about to leave your home. It is recommended to pause at your doorstep after saying 'Bismillah' and before stepping out. Utter the words with sincerity, visualizing Allah's protection and guidance enveloping you for the task ahead. Truly internalize the meaning of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah), understanding that all strength and ability to effect change comes solely from Him.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of protection and guidance. When a person says this, it is said that they are told: 'You are guided, you are taken care of, and you are protected.' This means that Shaitan (Satan) keeps away from them. For the specific mission of reconciliation, this dua imbues the reciter with the spiritual strength needed to face potential difficulties, remain patient, and speak with wisdom and kindness, all while being under Allah's divine care and protection.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'When a man goes out of his house saying, 'Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alal-lahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,' it is said to him: 'You have been sufficed, protected and guided.' Satan keeps away from him. And another Satan says to him: 'How can you deal with a man who has been sufficed, protected and guided?'
