Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This dua is recited when you step out of your home for any purpose, especially when embarking on a journey or heading out to fulfill an obligation like a promise. Stepping out to keep your word is a significant commitment, and invoking Allah's name and seeking His assistance at this moment is crucial for navigating any challenges that may arise.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's power and protection. Utter each word clearly as you prepare to leave your home. It signifies your complete reliance on Allah and your acknowledgement that no action can be accomplished without His will and strength.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that when a person recites this dua upon leaving their home, it is said to them: 'You are guided, defended, and your needs are met.' This means that Allah's angels will guide you, protect you from harm, and ensure your affairs are taken care of. Leaving to fulfill a promise is a matter of integrity, and this dua ensures you have divine backing for such noble endeavors.

Source & Authentication

Anas narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'When a man goes out of his house and says: Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah (In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, and there is no power nor strength save with Allah), it is said to him: You have been sufficed, defended, and guided. As for Satan, he retreats from him and says to his companion: What can you do with a man who has been sufficed, defended, and guided?'
