Dua for Seeking Companionship When Leaving Home for a Long Solitary Journey

Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2705

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey, the sorrow of returning, [from returning to a state of misguidance] after guidance, the supplication of the oppressed, and bad sights concerning my family, property, and children.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min wa'tha'is-safari, wa ka'abatil-munqalabi, wal-hawri ba'dal-kawri, wa da'a'il-madhloomi, wa su'il-mandhari fil-ahli wal-mali wal-waladi.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, offers comprehensive protection. It seeks refuge from the physical and emotional tolls of travel ('hardship of the journey', 'sorrow of returning'), the spiritual dangers of straying from guidance ('returning to a state of misguidance after guidance'), the injustice of others ('supplication of the oppressed'), and the distress that can befall one's family and wealth ('bad sights concerning my family, property, and children'). Reciting it demonstrates complete trust in Allah's ability to safeguard us.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Whosoever accompanies a funeral, let him say: Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him, and may He grant the deceased His mercy. And whosoever is on a journey, let him say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey, the sorrow of returning, the regret after the event, the neglected duty, the evil of the devil, and the evil of the Dajjal.' Ibn 'Abbas said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey, the sorrow of returning, the regret after the event, the neglected duty, the evil of the devil, and the evil of the Dajjal.' Ibn 'Abbas narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach them this supplication for the journey: 'O Allah, grant us in our journey the good company and the good succession, and protect us in our homes. O Allah, shorten the distance of the journey for us and let us have the provision of piety. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Vicegerent in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey, the sorrow of returning, the regret after the event, the neglected duty, the evil of the devil, and the evil of the Dajjal.' It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Three supplications are answered without doubt: the supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveler, and the supplication of the parent for his child.'
