Dua for Safety and Protection When Leaving Home

Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This dua is recited specifically when stepping out of your home for any reason, whether it's for work, travel, or seeking refuge. It's a declaration of reliance on Allah before embarking on any journey or activity outside the safety of your dwelling, acknowledging His protection as paramount.

How to Read

Recite this dua just as you are about to leave your home. It's recommended to say it with sincerity and a clear intention of entrusting your safety and well-being to Allah. The words themselves are a powerful affirmation of faith, so understanding their meaning enhances the recitation.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ promised immense protection to those who recite this dua upon leaving their home. It is reported that when one says this, they are told: 'You are guided, defended, and protected.' The Shaytan (Satan) is thus kept away from them, as one Shaytan says to another: 'How can you deal with a man who has been guided, defended, and is already protected by Allah?' This shielding extends to all forms of harm, including physical dangers and spiritual temptations.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'When a man goes out of his house and says: Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. It will be said to him: 'It is enough for you; you have been guided, defended and alerted.' So the devil (Shaytan) keeps away from him and says to another devil: 'How can you get to a person who has been guided, defended and alerted?'
