Leaving Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ.

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This dua is recited specifically when leaving one's home, for any purpose. When venturing out for political engagement, which can involve complexities, potential conflicts, and the need for clear judgment, this dua becomes even more crucial. It serves as a reminder that our strength and success ultimately come from Allah, especially when navigating challenging environments where seeking guidance and protection from misguidance is paramount.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a true reliance on Allah (tawakkul). Visualize yourself entrusting all matters, including the outcomes of your political endeavors, to Allah. It is typically recited immediately after stepping out of the house, or even while placing your foot on the threshold. The intention is to seek Allah's protection and guidance from the very beginning of your journey.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated that when a person says this dua upon leaving their home, they are told: 'You are guided, defended, and your needs are met. The devil will stay away from you and will not be able to approach you.' (Sunan Abu Dawud 5095). This comprehensive protection extends to shielding one from misguidance, both personal and societal, which is particularly relevant when engaging in public life and political discourse where differing opinions and potential pitfalls are abundant.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'When a man leaves his house and says: 'Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah', it will be said to him: 'You have been guided, you have been defended, and you have been (sufficiently) provided for.' Satan will then stay away from him. Another Satan will say to him: 'How can you deal with a man whom you have guided, defended, and been (sufficiently) provided for?'
