Dua for Protection from the Evil Eye When Leaving Home

Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 134

بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ

In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is recited when you are about to leave your home. It's a powerful declaration of reliance on Allah before stepping out into the world, which can sometimes expose us to unseen dangers, including the evil eye.

How to Read

Recite this with sincerity and a firm belief in Allah's protection. Focus on the meaning as you say it: acknowledging that you begin in His name, placing your trust in Him alone, and recognizing that all strength and power come only from Him.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua when leaving home is a practice taught by our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It serves as a shield, invoking Allah's protection over you for the duration of your outing. The Prophet ﷺ mentioned that when one says this dua, it is said to them: 'You are guided, defended, and protected.' Consequently, the devils turn away from them, and another devil says to him: 'How can you get to a person whom he has been guided, defended, and protected?' This comprehensive protection encompasses physical safety, spiritual well-being, and warding off negative influences like the evil eye.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'When a man goes out of his house and says: ‘Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.' (In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah), it will be said to him: ‘You are guided, defended, and protected.’ So the devil will stay away from him, and another devil will say to him: ‘How can you get to a person whom he has been guided, defended, and protected?’
