Dua for Protection Before Leaving Home

Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ.

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited by the believer before stepping out of their home for any purpose – work, errands, visiting family, or even just a short walk. It's a conscious acknowledgment of our dependence on Allah as we venture into the world.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with full conviction. Begin with 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah), acknowledging His blessing in your every step. Then, declare 'Tawakkaltu 'alallah' (I place my trust in Allah), entrusting your safety and affairs to Him. Finally, affirm 'Wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (And there is no might nor power except with Allah), recognizing that no strength or ability to do anything, good or bad, exists except through Him. It's often said while looking at the door or just before stepping outside.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that reciting this dua before leaving home brings immense protection. It is stated that when this dua is recited, it is said to the person: 'You are guided, defended, and freed from all harm.' This means the angels are assigned to guard you, and Allah Himself ensures your well-being on your journey. This practice fosters a deep sense of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and offers peace of mind as you face the day's challenges.

Source & Authentication

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person goes out of his house and says: Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. It will be said to him: 'You have been sufficed, defended, and guided.' And Satan will move away from him. Another Satan says to him: 'How can you deal with a person who has been guided, defended, and sufficed?'
