Leaving Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This dua is recited when leaving one's home, especially when embarking on a journey or undertaking a significant task that involves personal sacrifice, uncertainty, or a departure from the familiar. Reciting it signifies placing your trust in Allah as you step out into the world, entrusting Him with the outcome of your endeavors and the protection during your absence.

How to Read

Recite this dua clearly and with sincerity as you step out of your home. Visualize the words, understanding that you are actively seeking Allah's protection and guidance. The act of reciting it is an outward expression of an inner state of reliance on the Almighty, acknowledging that no action or success is possible without His will and support.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of receiving guidance, protection, and sufficiency. It is reported that when a person recites this, it is said to them: 'You are guided, defended, and your needs are met.' This means that through this dua, Allah suffices you, protects you from harm, and guides you to what is right. When leaving home for a significant personal sacrifice, this dua becomes a profound affirmation of faith, reminding you that your ultimate reliance is on Allah, not on your own strength or plans.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When a man goes out of his house and says: 'Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,' it is said to him: 'You have been sufficed, defended, and guided.' So the devil stays away from him and another devil says to him: 'How can you get to a person whom he has been sufficed and guided?'" (Sunan Abu Dawood 5095, graded Hasan by Al-Albani)
