Dua for Leaving Home to Seek a Spouse

Leaving Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4857

In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah. There is no power and no strength except with Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from straying or being led astray, from slipping or causing others to slip, from wronging or being wronged, from acting foolishly or being treated foolishly.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an adilla aw udalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw adhlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when leaving one's home for any significant journey or undertaking, including when setting out to meet a potential spouse. It's particularly relevant when you're leaving your familiar surroundings with the intention of finding a life partner, signifying your trust in Allah and seeking His protection and guidance in this important quest.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and full reliance on Allah (tawakkul). Utter the Arabic words clearly, internalizing their meaning. Visualize yourself entrusting all aspects of your journey and your search for a spouse to Allah's care. It's best recited immediately before stepping out of your home, as you make the physical transition.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua invokes Allah's protection against numerous spiritual and worldly harms. By reciting 'Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi,' you begin your endeavor with Allah's name, acknowledging His blessings and power. The phrase 'wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' is a profound statement of dependence, recognizing that all movement and strength comes solely from Him. Seeking refuge from straying, causing error, stumbling, being wronged, or being treated foolishly is crucial when embarking on a new path, especially one as significant as seeking marriage, where one's decisions and interactions have long-term consequences.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "When a man says when leaving his house: 'Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,' it is said to him: 'You have been sufficed, protected, and guided.' And the devil moves away from him. Another devil says to him: 'How can you get to a man whom he has sufficed, protected, and guided?'" (Sunan Abi Dawud 4857, graded Hasan by Al-Albani)
