Dua for Embracing New Beginnings When Leaving Home

Leaving Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللهِ

In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect for the moment you step out of your childhood home, whether for university, a new job, marriage, or any significant life change that involves leaving familiar surroundings. Recite it as you embark on your journey, as you get into your vehicle, or as you begin your new chapter. It's a declaration of reliance on Allah as you face the unknown.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, with full conviction in Allah's support. Say it aloud or in your heart as you begin your departure. It's more than just words; it’s an acknowledgement of your dependence on the Almighty and a request for His guidance and protection in this new phase.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication carries immense blessings. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that when a person says this, it is said to them: 'You are guided, you are defended, and you are protected.' The devil then moves away from them, and another devil says, 'How can you get to a man whom he has been guided, defended, and protected?' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5095). This means Allah's divine protection is invoked, shielding you from misguidance, harm, and the whispers of Shaytan as you navigate your new circumstances.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a person says: Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. (In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah. There is no might nor power except with Allah), it is said to him: 'You are guided, you are defended, and you are protected.' Then the devil says: 'How can you get to a man whom he has been guided, defended, and protected?' (Sunan Abi Dawud 5095, graded Hasan).
