Leaving Home
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 1342

O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this journey and the goodness of what is in it, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of this journey and the evil of what is in it. O Allah, make the earth easy for me (i.e., shorten the distance) and make the journey easy for me.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khaira hadhihis-safari wa khaira ma fihi wa a'udhu bika min sharri hadhihis-safari wa sharri ma fihi. Allahumma atwi lal-ardha wa hawwin 'alayyas-safara.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely, with the intention of seeking Allah's protection and assistance throughout your mission. Understand that 'goodness of the journey' encompasses its purpose, its outcomes, and your own spiritual state during it. The 'making the earth easy' refers to both the physical distance and the ease of traversing it, invoking Allah's power to overcome obstacles.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua seeks Allah's blessing for both the immediate journey and its inherent purpose. By asking for the 'goodness' of the journey and what it contains, you are asking for success in your charitable endeavors, protection from harm, and spiritual benefit. It acknowledges Allah's dominion over all affairs and His ability to make difficult things easy, which is particularly relevant when undertaking a mission that might involve challenges.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: When the Prophet (ﷺ) set out on a journey, he would say: Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest), and then he would say: Glory be to Allah Who made this subservient to us, and we could not have been able to do it ourselves. And surely, we are returning to our Lord. O Allah, make us ease our journey and make it a journey of piety. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey, and the Successor in the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of the journey, the evil of the sight and the bad tidings in the family (upon our return). And when we returned, we would say this too: We are returning to our Lord, repenting, worshipping, praising, and free from need (of anyone).
