Leaving Home
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5095

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.

Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah

When to Read

This dua is recited when you step out of your home, whether for a short trip to the local shop or a longer journey. It's a beautiful way to begin any movement away from your sanctuary, seeking Allah's protection from the outset.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Utter it clearly as you are about to leave your dwelling. Imagine each word painting a shield of divine protection around you. It's often said that reciting this also prompts angels to protect you and guide you back safely.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua as a means of seeking Allah's guardianship and assistance. When you say this, it's a declaration of your reliance on Allah, acknowledging that all strength and power originate from Him alone. This reliance is a source of immense peace and security. It's also narrated that when this dua is recited, it is said to the person: "You are guided, defended and your needs will be taken care of." This refers to the divine protection and guidance that accompanies one who places their trust in Allah (Sunan Abi Dawud 5095, graded Hasan).

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "When a person leaves his house and says: 'Bismillahi, tawakkaltu 'alallahi, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah,' it will be said to him: 'You have been sufficed, defended and guided.' And Satan will be distanced from him." Satan then says: "How can I get to a man whom I have sufficed, defended and guided?" (Graded Hasan by Al-Albani).
