Hajj & Umrah
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1521

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ حَجًّا مَبْرُورًا وَسَعْيًا مَشْكُورًا وَذَنْبًا مَغْفُورًا

O Allah, make it a Hajj Mabroor (accepted Hajj), efforts recognized, and sins forgiven.

Allahumma-jalhu hajjan mabrooran wa sa'yan mashkooran wa dhanban maghfooran

When to Read

This dua is recited when embarking on Hajj or Umrah, specifically when the intention is made and you set off for the pilgrimage. It's also beneficial to repeat it throughout your journey, particularly when experiencing the physical demands of the rites.

How to Read

Recite this sincerely with the intention of seeking Allah's help and acceptance for your pilgrimage. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for any other dua, facing the Qiblah if possible. Focus on the meaning of the words and beseech Allah to accept your worship and protect you from hardship.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua, though general for Hajj, encompasses seeking protection and ease during the journey. By asking for accepted Hajj, recognized efforts, and forgiven sins, we are indirectly asking Allah to alleviate the difficulties that might hinder us or detract from our worship. The physical exertion and heat are significant challenges of Hajj and Umrah, and seeking Allah's acceptance implicitly includes seeking His assistance in overcoming these obstacles. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to ask for these very things, highlighting the importance of sincere intention and divine support.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'For an accepted Hajj, there is no reward except Paradise.' Ibn 'Abbas narrated: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'You (O people) are commanded to perform Hajj, so perform Hajj.' A man asked: 'What is Hajj Mabroor (an accepted Hajj)?' He said: 'It is to feed the hungry and to speak kindly or remain silent.' In another narration, when asked about Hajj Mabroor, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'It is to provide food and to greet people with the Salam.' Narrated 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): I said, 'O Allah's Messenger! We consider Jihad as the best of deeds. Should we not fight in the Jihad?' He said, 'But the best Jihad for you (women) is Hajj Mabroor.' From these narrations and related teachings, the essence of Hajj Mabroor is established. The dua requested here is a comprehensive supplication for this state: 'O Allah, make it a Hajj Mabroor, efforts recognized, and sins forgiven.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1521, 1774, 1859, 3567)
